Migration guide · 2026

Migrate from Magento to Shopify.

Magento is powerful — but expensive to run, slow to change, and heavy to maintain. Move to Shopify Plus and cut your infrastructure bill by 60–80% while shipping changes in days, not months.

The problem

Why leave Magento?

The cost of staying

Magento hosting, agency retainers, security patches, and platform upgrades add up to an enterprise software bill — for a mid-market store. The math gets worse every year.

Slow to ship anything new

Every change needs a specialist who knows Magento. Finding them is hard, paying them is harder, and shipping a new landing page shouldn't take three weeks.

Speed problems that won't go away

Magento storefronts out of the box routinely miss the speed targets Google uses to rank you. Fixing it means layers of caching, database tuning, and CDN work — or starting fresh on a platform built to be fast.

What changes

What you gain on Shopify.

Modern, focused, maintainable

Shopify Plus gives you the extension points you actually use — custom pricing logic, checkout customization, API access — without a 4,000-page manual and a PhD in the platform.

Hosting you don't manage

A global CDN, automatic failover, and PCI compliance are all handled by Shopify. Your engineers work on the storefront and conversion — not on keeping servers up.

Hire from a bigger talent pool

Shopify developers are everywhere. Liquid and Hydrogen are mainstream — you stop paying Magento specialist rates and get changes shipped faster.

The process

How we run the migration.

  1. Discovery & data audit

We walk through your store together and catalog everything that needs to come over — products, orders, customers, blog posts. We check every URL and search ranking you care about so nothing slips through the cracks. You walk away with a written plan to sign off on before we touch a thing.

Deliverables: Audit report · inventory sheet · URL map · risk register

  2. Theme & storefront build

We build your new Shopify storefront in your brand — colors, type, layout, the lot. Any checkout customizations go through Shopify's supported extension points so nothing breaks on a platform update. Speed targets are baked in from day one, not bolted on later.

Deliverables: Theme repo · Figma mapping · speed report · staging preview

  3. Data migration & redirects

Every product, customer, and past order moves over intact — nothing lost, no orphans. We build a complete redirect map so every old URL points to the right new one. Google keeps the link equity you've earned and your rankings stay where they are.

Deliverables: Migration scripts · redirect CSV · SEO preservation report

  4. Testing & launch

We test the whole site top-to-bottom on a staging copy — checkout, search, admin, the works. Then we practice the domain switchover ahead of time so there are no surprises on launch day. Go-live happens during a quiet traffic window, with a one-click rollback ready if anything looks off.

Deliverables: Test suite · launch runbook · post-launch monitoring dashboard

Questions we hear

What people actually ask.

Will Shopify handle our product catalog complexity?
For catalogs up to about 100,000 products, yes — Shopify's standard product model handles it cleanly. For bigger catalogs or unusual setups (think complex product relationships, lots of custom attributes), we design a tailored structure during discovery. We've migrated stores with 500,000+ products.
What about our B2B pricing and customer groups?
Shopify B2B (included with Shopify Plus) covers company accounts, per-location pricing, draft orders, and payment terms like NET 30. For customer-group pricing that doesn't fit B2B cleanly, we add custom pricing rules that we map to your business in discovery.
How do we handle our Magento integrations?
All your connections (ERP systems like NetSuite, SAP, MS Dynamics — 3PLs, CRMs, and anything else) come over. We usually go through middleware like Celigo or Workato, or build a small custom Shopify app, depending on what you already use. We write down exactly what data flows where before we start, so success is objective, not a guessing game.
Can we keep our B2B customer-specific pricing?
Yes. Shopify B2B's company accounts and price lists cover most setups. For rule-based pricing (volume tiers, negotiated contracts), we use Shopify Functions — which lets us write your exact pricing rules as code that runs on every cart.
What's our rollback plan if launch goes wrong?
We keep both platforms running side-by-side for 72 hours after launch. Before we switch, we shorten your DNS cache time so we can point the domain back to Magento in under 5 minutes if anything unexpected comes up. The go/no-go criteria are written down and signed off before launch day — no surprises.
